Low Cost Kitchen Remodel

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is also one of the first rooms that people will see when they come to your home, the room they will base their judgments about you on. It is the room that your family spends a great amount of time in so when it is time to remodel, you will want to make sure that you are doing so without going completely broke. A low cost kitchen remodel project is achievable with a few tips.

Replace Only What is Needed

When some people remodel, they gut everything without considering what exists that can still be worked with. Before you get started, consider every element of your kitchen and determine what can and cannot be saved.

Low Cost Kitchen Remodel

  • Appliances: if the stove, refrigerator or both are still well within their prime, consider saving them. A quick paint job can change their appearance and allow them to continue serving their purpose.
  • Cabinets: do you need to replace the entire cabinet or can you reface the doors? If you are planning to replace the kitchen’s countertops, you might need to reinforce the cabinet’s base.

The same concept applies for other factors of the kitchen including the lighting fixtures, plumbing and more. If you still like the floor or the walls, then you might consider working around that component.

Do-it-Yourself to Save Major Money

One way to save some money on a kitchen remodel project is by using your own sweat labor. If your plumbing and wiring are in good shape, then you will not need to have them professionally updated. If you do choose to buy appliances, it is simply a matter of having them delivered and hooked up. However, if you are changing from electric to gas or vice versa, you may need to consider the cost of the installation of those appliances. Some of the tasks that you may be able to handle on your own:

  • Laying new flooring
  • Painting, papering or adding other types of wall covering
  • Installing new kitchen countertops
  • Resurfacing or replacing the kitchen cabinets
  • Changing the kitchen sink

The more work that you do for yourself, the more money you can save overall. Do not sacrifice your safety or the appearance of your kitchen to save money however.

Hiring Someone but Still Saving Money

There are still ways to hire a professional but still save some money when remodeling. These include:

  • Hiring for the best price by careful negotiation
  • Hiring for a remodeling project during the off season or the slower times when prices might be a little more flexible.

You can have some of the work done by students at trade schools if you are willing to take a little bit of risk. Remember, these students will be supervised the entire time.
